HIV/AIDS

Positive Parenting and Children is a charity providing support for children and families living with HIV and AIDS. CRIB developed out of this organization recognizing a need for a young people’s support group www.ppclondon.org.uk

National AIDS Trust - www.nat.org.uk - is a national organization campaigning for the rights of people living with HIV and AIDS and providing a range of innovative services including HIV education pack for schools.

Terence Higgins Trust - www.tht.org.uk - provides services for anyone affected by HIV, including a helpline which offers information and support Monday-Friday 10am-10pm and weekends noon-6pm on 0845 1221 200.

CWAC working with children living with HIV and AIDS www.cwac.org

AVERT provides information on HIV and AIDS including links to services across London and the UK. www.avert.org

KARIBU offers a child centred service to families affected by HIV and AIDS www.welcare.org

Positive Place is a charity for families living with HIV including peer support and an African family project - www.thepositiveplace.org.uk/

Positively Women is a charity specifically for women living with HIV - www.positivelywomen.org.uk

General Information

Thesite.org is a website full of information on key issues facing young people including:

  • sex and relationships;
  • drinking and drugs;
  • work and study;
  • housing, legal and finance;
  • health and wellbeing.

They also provide a service called Ask The Site which you can use to put questions to their experts.

Your local Citizens Advice Bureau offers advice on topics including benefits, housing, employment, debt and legal issues. There is lots of information on their website www.adviceguide.org.uk where you can also look for contact details for your local office.

Connexions Direct is an information and advice service for 13 to 19-year-olds. They have advisors available to talk to you from 8am to 2am, 7 days a week. It is confidential and free from landline phones. If you phone from a mobile they will call you back. 080 800 13 2 19. You can also access their website http://www.connexions-direct.com

CAFOD works to end world poverty, hunger and campaign for justice and also does specific work around HIVA and AIDS

Bereavement

Cruse Bereavement Care offers information, advice, counselling and support to anyone who has been affected by a death. Their young person’s helpline is open Monday-Friday 9.30am-5pm on freephone 0808 808 1677. You can also send them a message through their website - www.rd4u.org.uk

Children and Young People

Childline is a free helpline for children and young people in the UK. They are open 24 hours a day on 0800 1111 to talk about any problem.

National Children’s Bureau works in partnership with a range of organizations and has created a powerful, authoritative and influential voice to improve the lives of children and young people. CHIVA - www.chiva.org.uk - the Children’s HIV Association of the UK & Ireland, is an association of professionals who are committed to providing excellence in the care of children infected or affected by HIV and their families.

NAM - www.aidsmap.com - is a community-based organisation, which works from the UK. They deliver reliable and accurate HIV information across the world to HIV-positive people and to the professionals who treat, support and care for them. NAM supports people to take control of their lives and healthcare, understand and stick to their HIV treatmen and live longer, healthier lives.

Body and Soul - www.bodyandsoulcharity.org - is a UK charity supporting children, teenagers and families living with, or closely affected by HIV.

Disability

Disabled Living Foundation runs an advice service helpline on 0845 130 9177 which is open Monday to Friday 10am-4pm. Or you can email them on advice@dlf.org.uk

Radar is a London-based organisation which aims to empower people with disabilities. Their website www.radar.org.uk contains links to a variety of specific disability websites.

Emotional Support

The Samaritans helpline is available 24 hours a day to provide confidential emotional support for anyone experiencing feelings of distress or despair. You can call them on 08457 90 90 90 or email jo@samaritans.org.

Family and Parents

Parentline Plus is a charity which offers support to anyone who has a child. You can call them on 0808 800 2222 or send a message through their website at www.parentlineplus.org.uk.

Health – General, Mental Health and Sexual Health

NHS Direct is a 24 hour advice and health information service on 0845 46 47.

Brook provides confidential sexual health advice and services specifically for young people. You can call free on 0800 0185 023, Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm or you can send a question through their site at www.brook.org.uk.

R U Thinking About It? This organisation provides information and advice for young people around sexual health and relationships. It includes details of where to go for your nearest young person's clinic. www.ruthinking.co.uk.

Sexuality

The London Lesbian and Gay Switchboard provides information, support and referrals for anyone dealing with issues around their sexuality. Open 24 hours a day, their number is 020 7837 7324.

Violence and Crime

Victim Supportline on 0845 30 30 900 is for anyone who has been the victim of a crime. They offer information and emotional support 9am-9pm Monday to Friday and 9am-7pm at weekends.
